California gov't seizes $10,000 of Star Wars merch in fraud case

The courts have rolled out a fair share of strange rulings over the years — but the latest might take the cake. Or a boatload of Star Wars gear, to be precise.

California man Eric Hodgson, 43, has been charged with grand theft for a scheme to defraud the California Department of Transportation out of $2 million. But he cut a deal to reduce his charges by forfeiting two houses, two cars, some retirement savings and more than $10,000 in Star Wars merch he’d bought with the cash.

That’s right — Hodgson spent more than $10,000 buying a ton of Star Wars stuff, including a 3-foot-tall rubber Yoda figurine, some comics and unrelated toys. Stealing is bad, obviously, but that's a fun way to blow some cash.

Even after giving all the loot back, Hodgson will still face nine years in prison.

The most interesting question? What the government will do with all that Star Wars loot? Auction it off, probably. So Star Wars fans in Sacramento County need to be on the lookout for a good deal on the auction block.
