George R.R. Martin made an appearance on Conan last night, where he was grilled by Conan O’Brien about his propensity to kill off beloved characters on Game of Thrones.
Ned’s beheading, the Red Wedding, these are the deaths that shocked Game of Thrones viewers to the core.
In last night's interview (part one can be viewed above), Conan talked about the infamous Red Wedding, which aired Sunday in the penultimate episode of season three, “The Rains of Castamere,” which saw the horrific and gut-wrenching deaths of Robb Stark (Richard Madden), his pregnant wife Talisa (Oona Chaplin), and his mother Lady Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) and how “it melted people’s minds” and the reactions to it was “stunning.”
“You get us to really care about characters, love them, think they’re central to everything and then you KILL THEM,” Conan quips.
To which Martin replied “I always like unexpected things. I always like the suspense to be real ... I want my readers, I want my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page ... ”
Well, you bloody well manage that every time, George R.R. Martin. Well played, sir, well played.
Then Martin goes on to talk about actors begging him not to let their characters die … which is rather hilarious to hear about, before Conan shows Martin various fan reactions to the Red Wedding.
Have a look at those reactions below:
Later the discussion turned to the books (he's "writing very fast" cause he's scared the show will catch up to him) and to the many divergences showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought to the TV show, warning us that the series may not end exactly the same way as the books (though he hopes it will). [This part of the interview is not shown in the two new videos we added]
The Game of Thrones season finale airs this upcoming Sunday on HBO.
Are you guys still reeling from last Sunday's shocking episode? And are you afraid about the fates of any other favorite characters of yours?
