1st look at Evangeline Lilly in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Evangeline Lilly is channeling Robin Hood in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The actress appears in the upcoming sequel as a warrior elf called Tauriel. She's a master archer and trained to take down any and every opponent. She's also a new creation for the Hobbit universe, as the character isn't featured in J.R.R. Tolkien's original novel.

Tauriel was invented by director Peter Jackson and screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens because they wanted to pump some girl power into the male-dominated Hobbit. As expected, Tauriel will be especially close to Legolas and his family.

“Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thrandruil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her," Lilly reveals. "So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her.”

But don't let that fool you --  Tauriel can be as dangerous as she is beautiful. “She’s slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill,” Lilly says. And for those diehard fans who may feel Tauriel doesn't belong, the actress is ready for the fan hate.

"I kind of got prepped for that being on Lost, because we had avid fans who were really extreme in their feelings about the show and its characters. But I think if anyone knows how to respect Tolkien, it’s Peter, Fran and Phil. And Tauriel fits perfectly in that world.”

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters Dec. 13.

What do you think of the addition of Tauriel?
