We already knew Will Smith wouldn’t be back in the sequel to the 1990s invasion flick Independence Day — but it sounds like a few other cast members will be sticking around to battle aliens again.
The folks at Movies.com had a chance to chat with director Roland Emmerich, who spilled a few details about how they’re framing the cast without Smith back in the fold.
For fans who’ve been missing Jeff Goldblum this decade, you’re in luck. Emmerich revealed that Goldblum’s scientist character and Bill Pullman’s spirited president will both be back for the sequel, which should provide more than enough continuity despite the 20-year gap between films.
Here’s an excerpt from their report:
“When I pressed him on who those returning characters are, he said Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are on board so far. In the original Goldblum played the nerdy scientist heartthrob whose shticky relationship with his father (Judd Hirsch) provided some of the film's greatest moments. Pullman played the badass president of the United States who took to the skies to defend his country against the invading aliens.”
Despite the fact that Smith doesn’t seem too interested in returning to the franchise that made him a bona-fide action star, Emmerich did say he’s still holding out hope the actor will return for a cameo in an effort to “pass the torch” to a new generation of smartass alien fighters.
Independence Day 2 is tentatively scheduled to open July 3, 2015. Do you think the world needs another Independence Day?
