Little-known sci-fi fact: S.H.I.E.L.D. almost had a VERY different acronym

Nick Fury began as a very different sort of agent.

Before Fury became a household name, he was still just an idea in the heads of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. And before he was the Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization of spies went by a very different name. Check out what almost was!

Appearing in Marvel Masterworks: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #2, this splash page was a part of Kirby's original two-page presentation for what, ultimately, went on to become Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Kirby's linework was inked by none other than Jim Steranko, who had just come to Marvel looking for work. This was, apparently, a kind of test for him, to see what he could do.

But far more than Steranko, we're imagining what this concept would have been like. An organization called D.E.A.T.H. paints a darker and more morally gray organization, doesn't it? In fact, considering there's now both a S.W.O.R.D. and a S.H.I.E.L.D., we wouldn't mind one bit if D.E.A.T.H. turned up in a comic now.
