George Lucas was notorious for making changes in the development process of Star Wars (just look at how much the series has evolved from his original pitch), and now some new costume designs from the original trilogy show how Darth Vader and C-3PO changed along the way.
Some unearthed pics of actor Anthony Daniels trying on an early C-3PO prototype suit are a little slice of long-lost geek heaven. Even cooler? A prototype design for Darth Vader’s iconic suit with a very different, almost ant-like helmet design. The chest is also a simpler approach, but we have to say, the final version definitely has a much more sci-fi feel.
It’s interesting to think how these quick, behind-the-scenes decisions would go on to inform some of the most famous costume designs in cinema history. It’s also pretty cool to learn that some of those early sketches actually made it all the way into the physical design phase. Could you imagine tracking down one of these long-lost suits on eBay?
