Spidey 2 writer defends decision to include 4 villains in sequel

Worried that all the baddies that keep popping up in Amazing Spider-Man 2 could lead to an overflow of Sam Raimi proportions? Well, writer Alex Kurtzman says you shouldn’t be.

The first Amazing Spider-Man was the perfect size for an origin story and included the Lizard as a great villain to introduce us to the new world of Peter Parker. But part two is set to include Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) and Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan). That’s a pretty big rogues’ gallery to juggle.

In an interview with MTV, Kurtzman promises the final result will not be akin to the bad-guy overload of Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, which effectively killed any critical clout that version of the franchise still had in the tank:

"I think you have to go into it and say, 'is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever?'. We would never, ever do anything that wasn’t organic to the flow of the story. A lot of consideration has been given into the structure of that movie.”

Well, it’s nice to know they’re aware it could be an issue. Let’s just hope he makes good on the promise. If not? We all know how bad things can go off the rails.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to open in 2014.
