Is this our first look at a new Star Wars animated series?

The next Star Wars cartoon could be right around the corner.

It's been two months since Lucasfilm announced the cancellation of The Clone Wars and promised the beginning of "a new direction in animated programming." In the same press release that announced Clone Wars' end, the company also made this declaration:

"We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come."

Well, we may have just gotten our first peek at this new series, courtesy of Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni, who confirmed last month that he'll be involved in the future of Star Wars animation. Late yesterday Filoni posted this image to his Facebook page.

Filoni captioned the image with this:

"It’s hard to believe that I have worked at Lucasfilm almost eight years, and this is the first time I have ever gotten to draw a TIE fighter."

The caption implies that this sketch isn't just something Filoni did for fun, so we can pretty safely assume this is part of the next phase of Lucasfilm animation. And since it's a TIE fighter, and Lucasfilm promised us an animated series in a time period the films and TV haven't touched before, we can also safely assume that we're talking about a show set post-Return of the Jedi. Will it be a tie-in to Star Wars: Episode VII? Or a prequel? Or a standalone show set around the same time?

What do you think? Are you excited about all the things this image implies?
