Despite the fact that Sony has been a pretty solid steward of the Spider-Man franchise on the big screen, many fans are still waiting and hoping for the rights to finally go back to Marvel — freeing up the webslinger to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well, we all might be waiting a while.
A rumor briefly made the rounds this week that Sony was in talks to return Spider-Man back to Marvel Studios. But Ain’t It Cool News did some checking, and according to Sony exec Amy Pascal they will "never ever ever" let go of those rights.
Basically, they’ll have to pry that film deal from Sony’s cold dead fingers.
Honestly, it’s not surprising to hear that Sony has no plans to lose Spider-Man. Sam Raimi’s trilogy was a box-office juggernaut, and the Amazing reboot has a sequel in the works right now. They’d be insane to give away a proven commodity that fans still love.
Sorry, folks, Spidey is definitely not Daredevil or Ghost Rider.
Though we may never get Spidey back in the fold at Marvel, the franchise could be in much worse hands. Aside from the dreadful Spider-Man 3, Sony has been a pretty good steward of the comic. But there’s a part of us that will always want to see Spidey hanging out with Iron Man and company.
What do you think? Are you happy with Sony’s Spider-Man plan, or do you want the franchise back at Marvel?
