Uh-oh! Winter Soldier has Cap's shield in latest concept art

We may not have any set pics of Captain America’s new nemesis just yet, but a new piece of concept art shows the Winter Soldier in all his glory. And, uh-oh, he has Cap’s shield!

Marvel made the right call tapping Winter Soldier for the modern-day followup, as it is one of the most revered Cap stories from the comic canon. Plus, as fans know, it should be a great connecting line to the events of the first film.

With filming now underway, Marvel exec Kevin Feige is feeling a little chatty about what fans can expect from Cap’s latest adventure. Not surprisingly, Cap will continue to struggle with the spy-fi world of S.H.I.E.L.D., as his black and white fight against evil turns grey with the return of an old friend:

“We weren't going back to World War II. Cap cannot travel in time. So while Tony can go home to Malibu and Thor goes up to Asgard and Hulk can sort of ride the rails, Cap was stuck. So Cap does stay with S.H.I.E.L.D. because he has nowhere else to go. But he's not necessarily comfortable there. And just as he's given permission to let go of the past and to focus on the modern world, a ghost comes up. With the Greatest Generation in World World II, there's a tendency to reflect on that period and say, 'Things were black and white back then, and now it's hard to know who the bad guys are.' 'We wanted to play on that a little bit Cap being uncomfortable with the way S.H.I.E.L.D., and in particular Nick Fury, operates.”

The folks at Entertainment Weekly have turned up a new piece of concept art, which shows just how awesome the Winter Soldier should (hopefully) look. The bionic arm looks believably badass (and useful in stopping flying shields), and if they can nail down this style in live action, this could be one heck of a sequel.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson and Robert Redford. It’s set to open April 4, 2014.
