Mysterious investor could save that complex Dark Tower movie/TV plan

Much like Stephen King’s mythical Gunslinger himself, you just can’t count out those long-simmering plans for a TV show and movie series of The Dark Tower.

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have been prepping designs for an ambitious take on King’s supernatural fantasy series, which would play out over three films and two TV miniseries. But after failing to lock in financing, the team put together a pitch for a single film, which could spin off more sequels if it does well, and signed with Media Rights Capital to make it happen.

But now the plot thickens.

Grazer has apparently told Deadline that a mysterious “Silicon Valley investor” has approached him offering up enough capital to make the original, massive multiplatform plan a reality — so now they have a decision to make.

Basically, they can go with the secure one-film deal and see how it plays out, or bet on the unknown funding source and go (really, really) big. Of course, other questions remain. Namely, would likely-star Russell Crowe be willing to sign on for such a lengthy project, as opposed to a single film? Who knows? But it could be a factor. A big one, considering Crowe's star clout.

Which approach would you like to see Howard and Grazer take?
