Watch Abrams explain 1st clip from future-set series Almost Human

If the combination of J.J. Abrams and his former Fringe producer J.H. Wyman wasn’t enough to intrigue you already, the first action-packed trailer for Fox’s new series Almost Human has finally arrived — along with a behind-the-scenes clip with the producers breaking down the premise.

Set 35 years in the future, this sci-fi buddy cop series will follow a loner cop (Karl Urban) who is teamed up with an android. The pitch alone sounds a little cheesy, but the actual footage is great — and does a whole lot of world-building to establish the android-partner concept and why Urban’s character, John Kennex, is so against it.

It’s a good twist on the cop procedural genre, and it seems like it will be jam-packed with solid sci-fi trappings. With Urban at the center, and Abrams pulling the strings, this could be one of the better true sci-fi series of the fall.

In addition to the full trailer above, the network has also released the behind-the-scenes featurette below, with the producers digging deeper into the concept and teasing how they’ll flesh it out into a full series. Check out the behind-the-scenes clip below, with Abrams and Wyman explaining the premise of the series:

Almost Human will debut in the late fall on Monday nights, packaged with The Following. Considering the fact that The Following was one of the biggest hits for the network this year, it’s a great vote of confidence that they’d give the series such a prime spot.
