Cap stands with S.H.I.E.L.D. in first Winter Soldier image

With one year to go until its release, the Captain America sequel kicked off shooting this week.

Principal photography on the flick, which will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (best known for their Emmy-winning work on TV series like Community and Arrested Development) began Monday, and to celebrate Marvel gave us a peek at the set with the image above, which showcases star Chris Evans' attachment both to Cap's shield and to S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization that brought him back from the dead.

In addition to Evans, the film will also feature returning Marvel stars Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Toby Jones and Sebastian Stan. Among the new additions to the cast are Emily VanCamp (as Agent 13), Anthony Mackie (as Falcon), Frank Grillo (as Crossbones) and Robert Redford as senior S.H.I.E.L.D. officer Alexander Pierce. Here's Marvel's official synopsis:

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick-up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4, 2014.
