Check out concept art from 2 Hulk films (+ 1 that didn't happen!)

More than almost any other comic-book hero, the Incredible Hulk has had a checkered past when it comes to the big screen. Want to see some of the many failed designs that never made it past development?

Concept artist Benton Jew managed to work on three Hulk movies (one of which didn’t happen) and has finally let some of his sketches out into the wild.

After the hit 1970-1980s TV series, the studio didn’t really know what to do with the big green guy. So in the mid-to-late 1990s Universal was looking at ideas for a movie and pitched a strange standalone film about the Hulk duking it out with everyone from terrorists to giant evil insects.

This movie crashed and burned in development hell, meaning Bruce Banner would stay on ice until Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk debacle got off the ground. Interestingly, a lot of the early concept art revolved around actor Billy Crudup (Almost Famous), who was Lee’s first choice for the title role, ahead of Eric Bana.

Lastly, Jew helped create some storyboards for 2008’s Incredible Hulk, which are also pretty interesting to see, considering that it helped to launch Marvel's master plan.
