Thor 2 + Cap 2 writers tease how those films lead to next Avengers

With a whole new crop of superhero movies in the works, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe only looks to get more dense and complicated over the next two years. Luckily, Marvel gurus Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are here to explain how all these new sequels are the perfect roadmap to Avengers 2.

Marcus and McFeely wrote Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and did a lot of work on Thor: The Dark World. The duo recently chatted with /Film about the challenges of creating great standalone films within a huge, cohesive universe, and broke down the philosophy that is driving Phase 2.

Basically, they focus on telling the best one-off story and then figure out how the larger dominoes fall in the next phase. Gutsy, but it’s worked so far:

McFeely: Kevin is the dungeon master, so if there’s something we really need to know, he’ll tell us, but he doesn’t steer us. With rare exceptions does he say “We can’t do that because of this next movie.” More often than not he’ll say “Let’s get this movie right and whatever falls out after that,we’ll address in the next movie. We’ll make sure that we don’t steer that movie in the wrong direction.

Markus: And more often than not, when you’re thinking of the movies as a whole, it’s “What do you want the state of the world to be when Avengers 2 kicks off?” It’s never like, Cap has to put down a briefcase so the Hulk can pick it up. It’s never that specific. It’s sort of like, “Where do you want loyalties to lie when that movie opens?”

It’s interesting to see the holistic approach that tries to ensure the universe makes sense, as opposed to cheap little crossovers and easter eggs (though they have those, too). As for Avengers 2? We’re most interested about that “loyalties” comment, and it’ll be interesting to see where all the disparate team members wind up before they’re called back together again.

What are you expecting in Phase 2?
