The experts were right: Raimi's Oz shaping up to be a massive hit

The buzz was already building for Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, and some early opening data shows it could have a record box-office haul.

The Wizard of Oz sequel brought in $2 million in early Thursday night showings, and if the weekend keeps with the trend, that could make it one of the biggest March movie openings in history. Wow.

Tentpole projects have had a tough run this year (shown just last week with Bryan Singer’s big-budget bomb Jack the Giant Slayer), but Oz is apparently tracking extremely well across the board.

Disney is forecasting a $75 million opening weekend, but industry watchers say the actual numbers could wind up around $100 million by the time the last screens flicker off Sunday night.

The Hollywood Reporter projects Oz to at least have the third biggest opening in March history, behind The Hunger Games ($152.5 million) and Alice in Wonderland ($116). Considering that both of those flicks were box-office juggernauts, it’s not bad company.

Oz opened today, and work is apparently already underway on a sequel. Do you plan to slip on your ruby slippers for this one?
