Walking Dead's Kirkman hints whether Woodbury will carry on into S4

With the third season barreling toward a close, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has opened about what may (and may not) carry over into next year. So what about Woodbury?

Though the big-picture tale is about characters just trying to survive, each season has had its own arc—be it a trip to the CDC or trying to start a live on Hershel’s farm. Season three told the biggest story yet, with Rick’s gang at the prison facing off with the Governor and the forces of Woodbury. So could that story evolve into a multi-season arc?

Probably not, according to Kirkman, though he does leave enough wiggle room to make us wonder:

“That would certainly appear to be settling into a cycle. I don’t want to give anything away because we have some really cool stuff planned for the finale, but I will say that there is a resolution to the storyline at the end of the season, as people would expect. It becomes a whole complete story that you’ve been able to experience over the course of season 3. And It will set things up nicely for season 4. There are new places to go in season 4, but whether or not that means a new setting or new story direction or simply new characters I can’t really nail down any specifics.”

The season-long arc model has been a good fit for the series, and it makes sense they wouldn’t want to linger too long on a storyline when there’s a whole undead world still out there to explore. But you also hope they don’t have all this build-up to blow through a few episodes that could easily be fleshed out into several great storylines. Between the back half of season two and first half of season three, we’ve seen the best of both worlds.

Here’s hoping new showrunner Scott Gimple can make it all work for 16 new episodes next season. After seeing his solo writing style on last week's stellar episode, "Clear," it does have us cautiously optimistic.

What do you think? Would you like to see the Woodbury storyline continue for another year, or do you want the gang to move on?
