Buffy's watcher will be King in the CW's new Hunger Games-esque series

Anthony Stewart Head played the beloved Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for seven years, but now he's coming back to American screens as a king.

Fans of Head will no doubt be aware that he's not new to playing royalty. In fact, the former Watcher recently wrapped playing the father of King Arthur on BBC's Merlin. Clearly, though, Head's not ready to hang up the crown just yet, as he has just been tapped to play King Clarkson on The CW's new show The Selection.

The series, based on a story by Kiera Cass, has an almost Hunger Games quality to it. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection tells the tale of America Singer, a lowly working-class woman who is, you guessed it, selected along with 25 other women to compete for Royal Prince Maxon's hand in marriage.

Head's King Clarkson will play a seasoned leader who does his best to advise his son to select a bride based not on love, but on the basis of the strongest political alliance. Naturally, in the midst of the competition, there are also brewings of a rebellion.

Head won't be the only Whedon alum on the program. Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who produced and wrote for both Angel and Dollhouse, will act as executive producers and writers for The Selection. Considering the pedigree, we've got high hopes that the show will find success ... and that they can sneak in a few Buffy cameos here and there.
