Robert Redford explains his surprise casting in Captain America 2

Last week, it was announced that Oscar winner Robert Redford had joined the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. To say the news came out of left field would be an understatement. Redford is a Hollywood icon, with a  resume that puts him in a league of his own. What could pull a guy like him into a big-budget comic-book movie?

The actor recently participated in a Q&A for the Los Angeles Times Indie Focus Screening Series. It was there that he briefly explained the logic behind his decision.

“I'm doing this film because it's different. It's a new thing for me,” he revealed. “I think they're great. This is the kind of film I would have loved to see as a kid. I like the idea of stepping into new territory. I'm excited by it. I also think it's a good bunch of people who really know what they're doing.”

That's a sentiment we've heard a lot lately. When it comes to Marvel, many actors have referred to them as "good guys." We wonder how they lured him in? There's still a lot of mystery surrounding Redford's character. Thus far, it's been revealed that he holds a senior position at S.H.I.E.L.D. and is called Pierce.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in theaters April 4, 2014.
