Most sci-fi fans would agree the 1981 version of Escape From New York is pretty much perfect as far as early-'80s action flicks are concerned. The best part? Kurt Russell, as the eyepatch-wearing ass kicker Snake Plissken.
With plans for a reboot already ramping up, some early casting notes have already started to leak out. So who does the studio want to take on the iconic role? Not surprisingly, a couple of modern action veterans with a fair share of blockbuster experience.
According to the New York Daily News, Jason Statham (The Transporter, Crank) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) are the leading contenders for the role. Both seem like solid options, though those are some big combat boots to fill.
Producer Joel Silver (Sherlock Holmes, V for Vendetta) is calling the shots on this one, so hopefully he can successfully re-create the awesomeness. The original managed to balance just enough crazy in the story of a convict sent on a mission to rescue the president in a prison city to make it work, so let's hope Silver finds a way to balance the camp with modern action.
Who do you think should get the role? Can anyone take Russell’s place?
Here are the two potential casting options for the Escape From New York reboot.
