Why James Cameron wishes his Avatar sequels were more like LOTR

After James Cameron’s ambitious FX extravaganza Avatar became a monster hit, the pressure was on to continue the franchise. Four years later, creator Cameron is still trying to get a script together.

So what’s the holdup? Apparently it’s not that easy to create an entire alien universe to sustain a full series of films on your own.

In an interview with Play Goes Strong, Cameron said he’s still plugging away on the script for the sequel as he tries to create the universe in his mind. He connected the experience with a recent chat he had with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, where he told Jackson he’s pretty jealous that the Lord of the Rings franchise had J.R.R. Tolkien’s books to build on.

With nothing but his own imagination as inspiration, Cameron said he’s essentially writing novels in his mind to map out the storyline:

“I’m working on ‘Avatar 2′ and ‘Avatar 3.’ I was talking the other day with Peter Jackson and said, ‘You had it easy dude. You had the books when you did the second and third ‘Lord of the Rings.’ I have to create my own books in my head and extract a script from it. I’m deep into it and I’m living in Pandora right now. There is that start up torque where you feel it’s coming to you. Then you build up momentum. That’s when it gets fun. The characters talk and it’s writing itself. I’m almost there right now. It’s building fast.”

That makes sense, and sheds some light on why Cameron has already missed several presumed start dates to get the sequels off the ground. Here’s hoping he’s able to at least get something lined up soon, because you have to wonder how fired up fans will be if it ends up being 7-8 years until we actually get a new film.

What do you think? Are you still psyched for more Avatar?
