Snake Plissken is back! Escape from New York getting a reboot

You can’t keep a good badass down. It’s taken a few years to get off the ground, but it looks like that Escape From New York reboot is finally back on track.

Producer Joel Silver (Sherlock Holmes, V For Vendetta) is working to bring Snake Plissken back to life, with a retelling of the sci-fi classic that found Kurt Russell as a hard-nosed criminal sent into a lawless apocalpytic city to rescue the president.

The 1981 original was a true sci-fi action masterpiece, and Silver hopes to develop the property into a trilogy of films. The studio is comparing the strategy to the recent hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which successfully revitalized a stagnant sci-fi classic to its former glory.

The original Escape From New York was a modest box-office hit and had a cult following among fans, but its 1996 follow-up Escape from L.A. tanked, thanks in large part to a bloated budget.

Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first time someone has tried to bring the franchise back from the dead. A reboot has been kicking around development hell for years now, with Breck Eisner (The Crazies) originally attached to direct. Every action star under the sun was rumored for the main role at one point, with Jeremy Renner, Tom Hardy and Gerard Butler at the top of most heaps in the rumor mill.

But Silver’s take is apparently a completely new project, so anything related to that failed attempt wouldn’t apply here.

Now, the big question: Who do you think can take over Kurt Russell’s eye patch as the new Snake?
