Why it was so important Coulson be part of the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show

We all know Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) bit the dust in The Avengers, right? So how in the blazes will he be alive and kicking for that S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series? Unless the series takes place before the events of last year’s hit summer movie.

Well, Joss Whedon has revealed not only that the S.H.I.E.L.D. series will take place after The Avengers, but that Coulson will definitely be alive and kicking. No trick, no flashback. Ain't that super-exciting news!

This was revealed during Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing Q&A panel in Austin at the SXSW festival, where he addressed Coulson's return from the dead.

Cinemablend reported Whedon jokingly saying: "I’ll tell you guys this, Heimlich." Then he admitted, "I can’t talk about it," but he did say that he did indeed bring Coulson back from the dead for the ABC drama series and that "Yes," it is "For realsies."

So why did Joss Whedon want Coulson back for that S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series despite his apparent demise at the hands, or rather at the staff, of Loki (Tom Hiddleston)?

Speaking to Deadline he said:

The idea of the Little Guy is something that I am very fierce about, and there has never been a better Little Guy than Clark Gregg. That intrigued me, this world around the superhero community. It’s the people whose shop windows get blown up when the Destroyer shows up. It’s the more intimate stories that belong on television that we can really tap into the visual style and ethos, and even some of the mythology, of the Marvel movies. I think we’ve put together another really great ensemble headed by Clark. And how much it’s actually seeding or hinting or reacting to what’s going on in the movies is something we’ll let play out as we go. For me the most important thing is that people fall in love with it on its own merits, rather than constantly asking, “Is there gonna be an Avenger?” Well, there’s not gonna be a Hulk because that guy’s too expensive.

Hopefully (and if there is a TV God), the pilot will get picked up and the series will start airing in the fall.

Are you guys excited that Agent Coulson will truly be alive and kicking for that S.H.I.E.L.D. ABC series? Wanna start guessing as to how/why/when that happened?
