Matt Smith will catch monsters for Ryan Gosling in U.S. film debut

Doctor Who’s Matt Smith is crossing the pond sans his TARDIS to make his first U.S. film debut as the male lead in the Ryan Gosling-directed fantasy movie How to Catch a Monster.

The film also stars Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and Gosling’s main squeeze, Eva Mendes.

Variety reports that the:

Story is set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city and centered on a single mother of two being swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Production is set to start this spring.

How to Catch a Monster also happens to be Gosling’s first time pulling duty as a director.

Let’s hope Smith has much better luck making his North American film debut than his Who predecessor David Tennant had with his stunning turn as Peter Vincent in that (sadly) unsuccessful Fright Night movie remake. (Though Tennant’s performance as a Criss Angel–type illusionist/vampire hunter was arguably the best part of that movie.)

Do you think Matt Smith has what it takes to make a career on this side of the pond? And what do you guys think about that movie description? Do you find it intriguing?
