CONFIRMED: Disney CEO says we're getting Star Wars spinoff films

We've heard the rumors and seen the signs, and now Disney's head honcho is confirming that we will indeed see more than just another Star Wars trilogy at the movies.

In an interview Tuesday, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger said that Disney and LucasFilm will release standalone films to accompany the new trilogy.

"I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga," Iger said. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too."

How many is "a few"? Three? Four? Five? We don't know, but if you've ever felt like you can't get enough Star Wars, now's the time to start getting excited, because Disney's definitely planning to capitalize on the $4 billion investment they put down for the right to make these movies.

As for that rumor that the first of these spinoffs will star Yoda, Iger said he's leaving character reveals to Kathleen Kennedy and the folks at LucasFilm. However, he had no problem dropping Lawrence Kasdan's name in his confirmation, and since Kasdan was responsible for Yoda's introduction as co-writer of The Empire Strikes Back...Well, let's just say that even if it's not Yoda, Iger just gave that rumor more juice.

So, wer'e definitely getting Star Wars spinoff flicks in the next few years, and there will definitely be more than one. So...who wants to go ahead start the inevitable petition for a Joe Johnston-directed Boba Fett movie?
