Alan Moore's classic sure can bring in some serious scratch.
We mentioned not so long ago that Dave Gibbons' original Watchmen covers were all making their way to the Heritage Auction House. Well, the first three issues have now been sold, and, thus far, they have brought in $216,892.50. The split here is $155,350 for #1, $38.837.50 for #2 and $22,705.00 for #3. Not too shabby.
These items are coming from the private collection of Martin Shamus, who is the father of Wizard Magazine founder Gareb Shamus. As of now, that Watchmen #1 cover is in the top 10 highest-selling pencil-and-ink comic covers that have been publicly sold.
That's a bold start. Now we just need to wait and see what happens with the remaining nine covers. Hope you've got your checkbook handy!
