After kicking around the 1990s making beloved Mac games, Bungie exploded into the mainstream after being purchased by Microsoft and launching the hit Halo franchise on the original Xbox. A decade later, Bungie has finally revealed its next massive sci-fi epic: Destiny.
Described as a “shared-world shooter,” the game is being heralded as a mashup of traditional first-person shooters and MMORPGs into one massive, kickass package.
The future-set story will follow warriors tasked with protecting the last safe city on Earth from a mysterious entity, after humanity has moved on to other planets in the solar system. Since this is meant as an open-world game, Polygon reports that players will actually be able to explore entire planets in the Destiny universe.
If Halo was big, Bungie is aiming for insanely massive with Destiny.
Check out the first bits of footage in a documentary-style video put together by Bungie to explain the project:
The game is currently in development for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. No release date has been announced.
