1st deliciously creepy trailer for Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal series

It’s the season of serial killers, and the first trailer for Bryan Fuller’s Silence of the Lambs prequel Hannibal has finally been unveiled. So does it live up to the hype?

Set before the events of Silence, the series follows FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) as he hunts for the world’s worst serial killers. What he doesn’t know? His consultant, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), is murdering and munching on people right under his nose.

Mikkelsen has some big shoes to fill with Hannibal, but the snippets we see here are genuinely creepy. As for how the premise will work in the long run, the network says it will “explore the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.”

Fox was the first big network out of the gate with the serial-killer genre this season via Kevin Bacon’s surprise hit The Following, so it’ll be interesting to see if viewership can support two similar shows. With Fuller (Pushing Daisies) and the name brand of Hannibal, you’d think NBC would have the edge here. But viewers are already digging on The Following, and this one could come off as an also-ran despite its potential quality.

For now, take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think:

The show premieres Thursday, April 4.
