The coming of Godzilla is teased in two eerie new viral videos

The team behind Godzilla's latest incarnation has just ramped up its viral campaign, and we've got two strange, agonizingly short videos to prove it.

Over the weekend the Internet became aware of, a website for the fictional and apparently rather shady organization "M.U.T.O" that will feature in some way in director Gareth Edwards' new monster flick. The site looks to be filled with secrets, if you're willing to go and look for them (and in this case looking for them includes plugging some of your various social media accounts into the site), and so far intrepid searchers have come up with two short clips and a creepy, fiery photo.

What could that be? A crater left by an asteroid? A footprint from a monster? A crater left by a monster's atomic fire breath? We can only guess for now.

As for the videos, they're just as mysterious and even less clear. The first features garbled images, as though distorted by a faulty transmission (like, say, a transmission made harder to send by a monster's destruction), but we do hear a man's voice saying what sounds like "You want to help?" and get a brief, clear glimpse of soldiers opening a door in a tunnel. Check it out.

The second video is just as grainy, and just as brief, but perhaps gives us a bit more in the way of clues. We hear a man's voice again, this time saying "I realize not all of you have had hands-on experience," as well as a clear shot of a soldier jumping off something (a building? the back of a monster?), and a few other grainy images that could be an American flag and a nuclear missile being lowered into place by a group of people. Nuclear technology has played a huge part in the Godzilla mythos in the past, but of course, as warped as this video is, it could easily be something else too. Check it out:

So, what is M.U.T.O., and what does it have to do with the coming of Godzilla? For the moment, all we can do is keep digging through that website while speculating, but it seems almost certain that M.U.T.O. knows something about Godzilla that the rest of the world doesn't.

Tomorrow, hopefully, things will become clearer as the new Godzilla trailer drops around midday. In the meantime, what do you think is going on with these viral tidbits?

Godzilla hits theaters May 16, 2014.
