Watch fans go bonkers when Ian McKellen crashes a Hobbit screening

It’s awesome enough to get to see The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug this weekend, but what if Gandalf himself actually showed up to start things off right?

Some lucky moviegoers at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square theater got one heck of a surprise when Ian McKellen popped up to intro the movie before the screening kicked off, popping up after a theater employee made some typical announcements.

His reception? The theater exploded in applause, as most of the crowd gave McKellen a raucous intro of cheers. The actor then proceeded to chat with the audience a bit, giving some positively adorable notes about the film.
