Amazing Spider-Man 4? Not so fast, says Andrew Garfield

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Sony Pictures not only has The Amazing Spider-Man 2 coming out next May, but has already penciled in two more sequels for 2016 and 2018. There's just one problem, however.

The man who currently wears the costume, British actor Andrew Garfield, was asked about The Amazing Spider-Man 4 in a recent talk with Yahoo! Movies UK. His response? "That’s all news to me. I’m under contract for another one after this. As far as a fourth one ... that’s not anything to do with me."

The existence of a fourth Amazing Spider-Man apparently took director Marc Webb by surprise as well, because while he said in the same interview that multiple Spider-Man movies were always part of the plan, he added that the initial idea was "really a trilogy, to be totally frank."

So what does this all mean? There are several possibilities. One, Sony could sit down and negotiate a new contract with Garfield (who will be 35 by the time the fourth movie rolls around). Two, Spidey could be recast with a new face to launch a brand-new story. Or, three, a fourth movie could focus less on Spider-Man and more on the expanded universe around him.

With the Sinister Six almost a certainty for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Sony hinting that it wants to introduce "new heroes and villains," that last option is not too wild to consider. And let's face it, Spider-Man in action is mostly a CG construct anyway, so you could arguably get away with making a Spider-Man movie in which an actor never actually plays the role. (You think that's Robert Downey Jr. rattling around in the tin can in the Iron Man movies? Guess again.)

All we know for now is that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens on May 2, 2014, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 on June 10, 2016, and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 on May 4, 2018. Should Sony offer Garfield a new deal to keep him on board? Recast the role? Or make a Spider-Man movie in which Spider-Man never actually appears?
