Can Shailene Woodley dethrone Katniss? Find out in 1st Divergent trailer

You can't swing a dead mutation these days without hitting marketing for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, so the idea of any franchise unseating that 900-pound gorilla from its current perch atop the YA adaptation pile might seem far-fetched.

But there's been buzz building around Divergent, adapted from Veronica Roth's best-selling novel about a dystopian future in which people are divided into factions based on a personality test taken at adolescence and forced to live accordingly for the rest of their lives (kind of like Harry Potter's sorting ceremony if it were bleak and depressing ... er, *more* bleak and depressing).

And now a trailer has arrived, giving us our first look at the challenger.

Divergent certainly has a Hunger Games feel to it: A young girl who doesn't fit the mold bucks the system with the help of a handsome guy, leading to some difficult choices, some dark turns and the consternation of the powers-that-be.

What sets the story apart is its unique setting, in which the population is split based on personality traits into five groups -- Amity (peaceful), Abnegation (selfless), Dauntless (brave), Candor (honest) and Erudite (intelligent). When protagonist Beatrice is told she doesn't fit any one category, she finds herself classified as Divergent -- a no-no in this societal setup -- and forced to choose between her family, her future and fighting to maintain her identity.

It's an intriguing premise, and the film has some heavyweight casting going on to back it up. Beatrice is played by Shailene Woodley, who straight killed it in The Descendants, and she's joined the likes of Kate Winslet, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz and Ansel Elgort.

Will it be enough to make fans forget Panem? We'll find out when Divergent opens on March 21, 2014, but for now, check out the trailer and let us know what you think!
