19 frightening foreign language horror films you oughta see

Sometimes the best way to scare yourself is to step out of your comfort zone and into another language.

There are plenty of English-language horror classics out there, from the Universal monsters of the 1930s to Hammer Horror's ambitious and titillating slate of monster films, but there are also plenty of foreign-language flicks to consider when building the ultimate collection of horror. You can watch all the American horror classics you want, but if you're not exploring beyond the borders of your own language, you're missing a lot of truly classic terror.

With that in mind, for the ninth installment of our posts celebrating the 31 Days of Halloween, we've assembled a few essential foreign-language horror flicks that you simply must see to complete your terror cinema experience this Halloween. Keep in mind that there are dozens, even hundreds, of foreign horror flicks worth seeing, but this is definitely enough to get you started. And besides, after you've seen some of these, you might just want to hide under the covers until it's time for Thanksgiving.

What's your favorite go-to foreign-language Halloween flick?
