After telling a classic ghost story in its first year, FX’s hit series American Horror Story went absolutely insane (literally) for season two—with aliens, demons and serial killers all thrown into the Asylum. The biggest mystery that still lingers? Those freaky aliens.
The season might be over, but the writers opted for a more nuanced finale that focused on the characters and left some of the big MacGuffins still floating out there. Among those lingering WTF story points was the constant specter of those mysterious aliens that popped up every few episodes to bring people back to life and steal babies.
Though the series never gave us a really good look at the creatures on-screen, they did sketch out some detailed alien designs to use behind the scenes. Lucky for us, concept artist Jerad S. Marantz has been kind enough to share some of the alien art for Asylum, as well as some alternate creature pitches for the experiment victims.
After seeing these alien designs in all their glory, I’m a little sad the series never opted to show these things on-screen in a meaningful way. Sure, they were keeping it mysterious, but these are some great alien designs. You have the classic throwback “little green men” style mixed with some freaky insect traits. Very, very cool.
