With Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy in the rearview mirror, the big question now is what happens next for the Caped Crusader? Turns out, long-time Batman producer Michael Uslan has a few ideas.
Uslan has been working with Batman ever since Tim Burton’s original film, and has kept his hand on the franchise all the way through Nolan’s run. So what would he like to see next?
Speaking strictly as a fan, Uslan said he has two pretty great ideas for what Warner Bros. and DC could do next. First up, he’d like to see a live action adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, with original 1989 stars Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson back to play Batman and the Joker. How cool would that be? His other idea is even more far-fetched, but its one that a vocal contingent of Batman fans have been begging to get made for years. Two words: Batman Beyond.
Here is his full statement, which is any Batman fan’s pipe dream:
"I have to say, not speaking as a producer. Understand that? I'm just wearing my fanboy hat right now. One day it dawned on me there are two actors out there who are the absolute right age right now to do The Dark Knight Returns in live action, Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.
Now if I could put my fanboy hat back on, not the producer hat. How cool would it be to see a Batman Beyond movie? With Bruce Wayne in his 80s training a young Batman, and how cool would it be to see Clint Eastwood as Bruce Wayne in his 80s?"
Admittedly, neither one of those pitches really fit with the Justice League concept DC is keen to kick off, so they’re long shots. Plus, Nolan dipped into parts of the Dark Knight Returns storyline with his final film, so it’d be unlikely the studio would want to take another crack at it so soon. As for Beyond, it's unlikely they'd ever do anything without Bruce Wayne wearing the cowl. Too risky. But could you imagine Clint Eastwood as grizzled, old Bruce Wayne? Just awesome.
Which idea do you like the most?
