New Spartacus star responds to rumors of Julius Caesar spinoff

Todd Lasance may be one of the brand-new names of the upcoming third season of Spartacus, titled War of the Damned, but the relatively unknown actor (at least here) will be playing the major historical figure of Gaius Julius Caesar. With rumors rife of a spinoff featuring Caesar, the actor reveals how he was thrown into the show and addresses those reports.

Here's what the 27-year old Australian actor had to say to the New York Daily News about those spinoff rumors:

"Honestly, we haven't had any specific conversations about where Caesar will go or what will happen in the future. I'm kind of in the dark. But it's certainly something I'd look at if the opportunity presented itself."

Lasance reveals that in order to prepare for the role he's read what he could about Caesar, noting that there isn't much on the Roman legend's early years. Here's how he describes his take on one of history's most famous names on the bloody and sexy Starz series:

"He's kind of the rogue of the Roman Empire. He's a lot more hands-on and getting dirty on the battlefield than what you'd expect. I think it'll be a nice surprise, and a new twist on Caesar.

"They picture the white cloak and the wreath around the head. That couldn't be any further (from the truth) actually. They focus a lot on the period during his 20s, where he was on the battlefield with a sword. There are some epic fight scenes. So it's a lot dirtier and grittier and a more hardcore version of Caesar than I think anyone would have seen before."

Lasance also spoke about how his first week of shooting involved getting bathed by three nude women (not a bad day of work for him, we guess):

"I didn't know exactly how it would be playing out. To be honest the whole initial first week of shooting was one of the scariest moments of my life.

"You're not only stepping onto an established show, but also the magnitude of who I was about to play and what I was about to undertake was kind of setting in at that point. It was a little awkward going into that. I think that was my second scene that I shot."

Spartacus: War of the Damned will return to Starz on Friday, Jan. 25. Will you be watching?

Starz's Spartacus is many things. It's a gripping violent drama with sweeping historical and political scope; it has sex aplenty (and equal opportunity nudity, thank you very much); but most of all, it has a lot of bloody and gory killings where the blood flows and flows and, well, flows.
