ABC still hasn't made a decision on Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D.? Really?

For all the buzz that Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. series has generated over the past few months, it's easy to forget one crucial point—the network hasn't even technically given the show a green light yet.

While chatting up the fall schedule to Zap2it, ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee said he was hopeful the network would bring Whedon's (Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) small-screen extension of the Marvel universe to series, but they're still waiting to see the pilot before saying yes.

But considering the wave of positive buzz still coming off The Avengers, Whedon's impeccable record as a TV producer and the fact that they axed another show from development because it was competing with S.H.I.E.L.D.—you'd have to think it's only a matter of time, right?

Here are Lee's comments:

"We haven't yet seen the pilot. We fast-tracked that one before the others; we'll get to see it a lot earlier than the others. We're very hopeful that's going to go forward to series. We'll build our marketing campaign early for it ... By the way, the script's great. I don't want to jinx it, but I'm very excited about it."

[Joss] is very engaged with the series if we go to series. He's already working on scripts. We shot it in Los Angeles to make sure he's free to work across his feature life and television life. But I love to see Joss, who of course has made many great television shows in his day, enjoying television as much as movies."

It seems that unless Whedon turns in a terrible pilot (which is unlikely, though networks have a record of not liking his pilots), this one is probably a lock to get a spot on ABC's schedule at some point. Despite the spotty history of superhero shows (aside from recent hits Smallville and Arrow), Lee seems confident about the series' chances. He likened the effort to current fairy-tale hits Once Upon A Time and Grimm, noting that if it's executed well, people will tune in for a different type of genre:
"I think you would have said exactly the same thing about fairy tales. I think it's our job to create a television series that delivers every week, to make it fit on ABC and to market it well. We've done that with fairy tales -- let's see if we can do it with superheroes."
