Supernatural producer defends those controversial flashbacks

The current season of Supernatural introduced the love-it-or-hate-it storytelling tool of flashbacks—and to say that fans have been split on the tactic would be an understatement. So what does series producer Jeremy Carver have to say to all those haters?

Despite the fact that fans have blasted the flashbacks into Sam's (Jared Padalecki) missing year, which have been a major change of pace focusing on his "normal" year trying to have a relationship, Carver said he's proud of the decision and thinks it provided the perfect way to tell this season's story.

Plus, Dean's (Jensen Ackles) flashbacks peeling away the layers of his time in purgatory were actually pretty awesome.

Here's how Carver explained the move to TV Line:

"These next couple of weeks will fill out even more what we wanted to get across. I'm very proud and very happy with the flashbacks, and I think it's a really interesting departure for the show to take."
Speaking of those flashbacks, it also gave us a chance to meet Dean's vampire pal Benny (Ty Olsson), who will come back into play in an upcoming episode. According to Carver, Dean's loyalty will be tested—and he and Sam could end up on opposite sides:
"Everything that Dean has said, everything that Sam has said regarding Benny, has not gone into the wind. They're very acutely aware of where they stand...

[For Sam, it's] rather tough to see [the] surprising amount of faith, trust and love that Dean puts into Benny, especially with some things that Dean has said about Benny in comparison to Sam. It just speaks to how far apart these guys were driven."

What have you thought of the flashbacks this season? Good idea, or Lost gone bad?
