Looks like that Angry Birds movie is actually gonna happen

It was only a matter of time before noted smartphone-time-waster-turned-global-phenomenon Angry Birds finally got the big-screen treatment. Now the game's developer has officially announced that the flick is happening, and they've already got a release date in mind.

Angry Birds developer Rovio announced this week, on the third anniversary of the original game's release, that they've hired Despicable Me producer John Cohen to produce the Angry Birds movie with the goal of a summer 2016 release date. The movie will, of course, be a CG 3D animated feature, and also includes former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel as an executive producer.

Taking its cues from Marvel, Rovio will finance the film itself and retain creative control over the project without the interference of a Hollywood studio.

"John's an exceptionally talented producer, and we're delighted to have him join the flock," said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment. "With John's hands-on producer background and David's expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things."

The original Angry Birds game has been downloaded more than one billion times since its 2009 release, and has spawned several sequels (including Angry Birds Star Wars, which jumped to the top of download charts less than three hours after its release), not to mention candy, stuffed toys, T-shirts and a worldwide hatred of evil green pigs. We don't know the plot of this feature film version (though we assume it has something to do with a post-apocalyptic future where roving bands of helmeted pigs are a constant threat), but it seems like it's already got a built-in box-office haul.

What do you think? Will you go see the Angry Birds movie?
