Fringe cast explains why that heartbreaking death had to happen

In its final season, Fox's cult fave Fringe hasn't been afraid to take out main characters on the way to the epic finale. But the latest episode's shocking death caught almost everyone by surprise. Luckily, the cast is here to explain why it had to happen. Spoilers ahead!

As we saw in the most recent episode "Anomaly XB-6783746," longtime recurring character Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) put a bullet in her own head to protect Olivia and company by preventing the Observers from getting in her head.

It was a true moment of sacrifice for a character who has bounced from ally to ambiguous to enemy throughout the series' numerous timelines. According to the cast, it was the final evolution of a character who came a very long way over the past five years.
