What the Disney/Lucas deal means for that Star Wars 1313 project

Lost in all the insanity of Disney's buyout of Lucasfilm was the fate of Star Wars 1313, a dark new videogame set in the Star Wars universe that had fans buzzing a few months ago. So what happens to it now?

Luckily, it seems the merger won't have much of an effect on the game, which has long been in development around Lucas' camp. But, judging by the direction Disney wants to take Star Wars in the long term, it could be one of the last attempts we ever get at a massive big-budget game.

The folks at TechCrunch caught up with Disney CEO Bob Iger, who said the plan is "likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console," but console games could still happen "opportunistically." Whatever that means.

That's not much of a surprise, as the mobile and social arena offers minimum development costs and potentially big returns (i.e. Angry Birds, Where's My Perry), as opposed to the expensive gamble of pouring resources into a console/PC game that might not prove a hit.

It's a good move in the business sense, but it could be the beginning of the end for fans of expansive console games in the Star Wars universe. So let's hope Star Wars 1313 is a good one, because it might be the last big Star Wars console game we get.

Named for Level 1313, a ruthless criminal underground deep below the surface of the planet of Coruscant, the game puts players in control of a deadly bounty hunter as he uses an arsenal of exotic weaponry to hunt down his marks and uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy. Star Wars 1313 emphasizes epic set pieces and fast-paced combat with a hero who uses human skills and gadgets, rather than supernatural Force powers, to make his way through this dangerous world.
