Check out 10 special FX films the Academy thinks are Oscar-worthy

In the age of wicked awesome special effects, it seems like every sci-fi blockbuster is trying to top the last. But which are the cream of the crop, according to the professionals?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the 10 films in contention for this year's Best Visual Effects Oscar. Not surprisingly, there are some darn good options.

Check out the shortlist below, along with some clips showing off the special effects:

The Amazing Spider-Man

The Spidey reboot took a different approach to the superheroic look, and that initiative paid off with a nomination.

Cloud Atlas

The Wachowskis' latest generation-spanning epic included some amazing effects as it shifted the narrative from the past well into the far future.

Marvel's The Avengers

Joss Whedon's epic Marvel team-up made a full-fledged alien invasion battled by a team of superheroes actually look awesome and believable on screen.

The Dark Knight Rises

It's nice to see Dark Knight Rises make the cut, as it features a few more practical effects than your average blockbuster these days. But, from the Bat to those epic fight scenes, this one featured its fair share of quality FX work.

John Carter

It may have been a box office-dud, but that wasn't for a lack of awesome FX. This big-budget Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation did an amazing job of showing off the awesome world of Barsoom.

Life of Pi

Considering that this is one of the most visually stunning films out this year, it's no surprise to hear it's on the Academy's short list.

Prometheus

Ridley Scott's eagerly anticipated Alien prequel might have been a mixed bag with fans storywise, but the awesome FX were easily its strong suit.

Skyfall

It's been called the greatest James Bond film ever, and the practical and CGI effects were fantastic.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

It may not be out yet, but you don't have to look much further than the trailers to see that the Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy plans to push the limits of FX technology once again.

Snow White and the Huntsman

This one proved a surprise hit behind stars Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart. The effects really sold the dark fantasy tale.

So which of these do you think is the best? Who deserves the top prize?
