Bilbo is armed and dangerous in 1st clip from The Hobbit

For all the trailers we've seen in recent months, Warner Bros. has yet to drop an actual clip from Peter Jackson's eagerly anticipated The Hobbit—until now. Want to see how Bilbo got that glowing sword he'll eventually pass on to young Frodo?

This clip seems to pick up just as things start to get dangerous, so Gandalf (Ian McKellen) decides to pass on a nifty sword dubbed Sting to his young hobbit pal Bilbo (Martin Freeman).

It's a bit of a tweak on how Bilbo comes across the sword in J.R.R. Tolkien's canon, but this scene does give McKellen's Gandalf a chance to offer some sage advice for the dangers to come.

Check out the clip below and let us know what you think.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens Dec. 14.
