15 awesomely horrific Game of Thrones deaths (+ a bonus LOL one)
People die all the time on HBO's hit fantasy series Game of Thrones. In fact, there are many, many deaths on the TV adaptation to George R.R. Martin's amazing A Song of Ice and Fire book series. So for the 18th of our 31 Days of Halloween features, we're bringing you a few of the goriest deaths from the past two seasons—and we've even got a funny one.
[Obviously—spoilers ahead!]
As we said above, there were many, many deaths on Game of Thrones these past two seasons, so this list is not an exhaustive one. Rather, we chose a couple of deaths that we thought were gruesome and gory enough be thinking about as Halloween approaches.
So without further ado ...
Tyrion Lannister Kills a random Mountain-Man with a shield
Death by Shield. Who knew the half-man (and everyone's favorite hero) Tyrion Lannister had it in him to bludgeon that poor mountain man's face over and over and over and over (you get the drift) again with a shield? It made for a rather spectacular, and very gory, death.
Viserys Targaryen: Death by molten gold crown
Poor Viserys. He finally got his crown from Khal Drogo after all! Just not the way he expected. After acting the spoiled little prince he was and threatening (bad, bad move Viserys) to kill his own sister Daenerys and her unborn child, Viserys got what he deserved from her hubby the mighty Khal. A golden crown on his head. Daenerys was right—he wasn't a true dragon after all.
Jory Cassel: Death by knife through the eye
There was a lot of foreshadowing for Jory's impending doom once he told Ser Jaime Lannister that he'd almost gotten killed during Robert's Rebellion when he suffered a knife wound near his eye. Then Jaime killed him by shoving his dagger through Jory's other eye up to the hilt, making us go eww and nooo all at once.
Khal Drogo cuts Mago's throat then rips his tongue out
This one almost speaks for itself, and yeah, we're not saying that with tongue-in-cheek. (Sorry. We really felt like we had to go there.)
The Godwife Mirri Maz Duur is burned alive on Drogo's funeral pyre
By killing Daenery's Sun and Stars, the mighty Khal Drogo, Mirri Maz Duur assured herself a very gruesome and horrible death when she was tied up to Drogo's funeral pyre and left to burn alive. She screamed. A lot.
Joffrey shows Sansa the heads of her father Lord Eddard Stark and her Septa mounted on spikes
Okay, okay, there's no death directly involved in this video. And those are only heads on spikes. But we can't help but feel for our poor girl Sansa here. Besides, it's pretty darn gruesome to see the heads of people you once loved and knew mounted on spikes like that, rotting and being pecked away by ravens. The gross factor is really way up there (pun intended).
Yoren's Death
Another example of foreshadowing here. Earlier in the episode, our brave Black Brother of the Night's Watch Yoren was explaining to Arya how he'd killed the man who killed his brother by shoving an axe in his face (the man had to be buried with the axe STILL in his face). Then Yoren gets killed by arrows, lances and has a sword shoved through the back of his neck by the Mountain.
Lommy gets Arya's sword Needle through the neck
Dear Lommy, we hardly knew ya, but seriously, don't ever tell anyone (namely the bad guys who want to kill every one of you) they have to carry you because you're injured. Just shut up and pretend you're dead. Hard lesson learned.
Ser Rodrik's Death
Oh boy, that one was pretty gruesome. We have Theon Greyjoy, once a ward of the Starks in Winterfell, turn turncloak and hack away at poor Ser Rodrik's head. It mirrored what Eddard Stark did in the very first episode with that deserter of the Night's Watch. Except Theon is no Ned and he doesn't have Ice, the Valyrian steel great-sword, making for a very messy and heartbreaking beheading. Plus all that kicking of Ser Rodrick's head afterwards was a low point for Theon.
Renly's death by Melisandre's shadow baby
Right. This one is not gory or gruesome per say, but with the heavy fantastic and supernatural element that gave birth to the Red Priestess Melisandre's shadow baby, it's kinda perfect for Halloween.
Death by rat torture
Yep, that one is pretty much up there in the gross factor. Being tortured to death by having a rat rip and eat its way through you is pretty yucky.
The High Septon gets dismembered by a hungry crowd
You're a hungry mob and there's a shortage of food? No problem! Just dismember the High Septon of King's Landing and be the skinny guy that waves one of his body parts high in the air with glee! Then you can go and roast those body parts for dinner ... Okay we're getting sick thinking about it right now.
The Hound disembowels peasants
Do. Not. Mess. With. The. Hound. Especially when it concerns the little bird. Those peasants learned that lesson the hard way: By being awesomely disemboweled by Sandor Clegane.
The Thirteen gets their throats slashed
The treachery of Pyat Pree and Xaro Xhoan Daxos runs really deep when they execute the Thirteen (well the other Eleven of them) of Qarth by slashing their throats. All that gurgling and blood makes us shiver.
The Hound cleaves men in two during the Battle of Blackwater
Let us put this another way. Do NOT Mess with the Hound. Stannis Baratheon's men learn that the VERY hard way. Nothing more gloriously gory than seeing a man neatly cleaved in two. Just sayin'.
The very funny death of Amory Lorch
Death isn't funny, but you can't argue against the fact that this one was the most hilarious death seen on Game of Thrones yet. After Arya gives Jaqen H'ghar the name of Ser Amory Lorch to kill, the whole situation becomes worthy of a sitcom. Almost.
