Revolution producer defends [REDACTED]'s shocking death

The teasers had been promising a Revolution regular would bite the dust all week, and the writers didn't pull any punches in the most recent episode. Now that our hearts have been completely broken, producer Eric Kripke explains why a fan-favorite character had to die. Spoilers ahead for the most recent episode!

Surrogate mother and sassy survivor Maggie (Anna Lise Phillips) took a knife to the leg this Monday, and didn't make it through the episode alive. We'd learned a lot about Maggie in recent weeks, whose deepest desire was to one day find her children, who were trapped on another continent. Now we know she never will.

According to Kripke, it was all about setting the stakes. The theme of death being just a rusty nail away was woven throughout much of the episode, and Kripke said the killing of a regular was to show viewers the dangers of the post-electric world.

He told Zap2It:

"Anna Lise is a wonderful actress and I love that character. I sort of have a bad habit in the shows that I run of killing off the people that I love. We decided internally very early on that it was important to show that this world had real stakes and was truly dangerous -- you're not close to hospitals, paramedics, help. We realized the scariest thing we could do was to kill the doctor among them. It was purely a creative decision about giving the world a real charge of danger. As we move forward in the series we want the audience to understand no one is safe, including the main characters."
The death did come as a shock, especially after we finally get to see exactly what drives Maggie to want to protect her newfound family.

What did you think of the decision to kill off Maggie? Gutsy, or reckless for the sake of reckless?
