A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman is a Lovecraft story told from the perspective of Holmes and Watson. Or is it? And why is the word "Rache" written in the blood of a murder victim?
The Shambler From the Stars by Robert Bloch features a protagonist that is clearly meant to be H.P. Lovecraft himself. The Lovecraft stand-in gets an ancient text translated. Things don't work out so well. Lovecraft wrote his own response to this book where he reaps revenge on Bloch.
The Lurker at the Threshold by August Derleth was actually built from two small story segments written by Lovecraft. When Ambrose Dewart finds a warning in an old family manuscript concerning âHim Who lurks at the thresholdâ he investigates his familyâs past and discovers unspeakable revelations of the Great Old Ones.
The Events at Poroth Farm by T.E.D. Klein weaves the tale of a college lecturer who, in studying horror stories to teach in the next semester soon discovers that the dread supernatural is all too real.
Allan and the Sundered Veil by Alan Moore appears in the back of his graphic novel "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." Starring Allan Quatermain who, after faking his death, takes a drug which leads him into the sleeping world. Features Randolph Carter from Cthulhu Mythos along with the horrifying Mi-go.
The Burrowers Beneath by Brian Lumley features occult investigator, Titus Crow, as he looks into a miner's discovery. Could the ancients be returning to hatch their monstrous spawn?
A Colder War by Charlie Stross fuses the Cold War with Cthulhu mythos. The story may or may not involve Saddam Hussein unleashing the gate of Yog-Sothoth over a bad joke made by Ronald Reagan.
Final Draft by David Annandale is the ending of everything and told in the most insidious way. Visually arresting and cosmically hopeless.
The Void by Brett J. Talley. In the deepest reaches of space, on a ship that no longer exists, six travelers stare into the abyss . . . and the abyss stares back. Man has finally mastered the art of space travel and in a few hours passengers can travel light years across the galaxy. But, there's a catch-the traveler must be asleep for the journey, and with sleep come the dreams.
Displaced Person by Lee Harding tells the story of a young adult just finishing school who finds himself gradually disappearing from the consciousness of those around him. What is causing it, why, and what happens when you are completely forgotten?
The Fungal Stain by W.H. Pugmire deals with the theme of Lovecraftian dreams as thresholds to alien emotion, dimension, salvation, damnation. That pretty much tells you what you need to know.
The Mist by Stephen King tells the story of Bridgton, Maine and how, one day, a thick and unnatural mist spreads across the town. What it conceals is unknown but that you will die is certain.
The Franklyn Paragraphs by Ramsey Campbell requires only one sentence to sell you. "These days Brichester has an impressively mundane surface, but I still sense that it may crack." Hint: it does.
The Horror from the Hills by Frank Belknap Long has the distinction of being supposedly written based off a dream Lovecraft actually had. Chaugnar Faugn wreaks havoc in Manhattan, and only a few of brave men try to stop him. What more do you need to know?
Hallucigenia by Laird Barron is a short story in the Imago Sequence. In it, a rich couple encounters a giant wasp nest in an old abandoned barn. They both are attacked by something they don't remember. While his wife is in a coma, the husband investigates who owns the barn and tries to find out what really happened there.
