Pilot a Viper in awesome fan-created Battlestar Galactica videogame

Want something done right? Do it yourself. Some fierce Battlestar Galactica fans took that phrase to heart and designed a game that'll let you captain your very own Viper starfighter. And here's the frakkin' cool launch trailer!

Last year, Battlestar Galactica Online went live, with a few grunts and groans due to issues with the flight simulator and ho-hum graphics. To correct things, an inspired squad of hardcore gamers developed Diaspora: Shattered Armistice, a free downloadable spacefighter combat simulation you can play by yourself or online with friends. Streak through the stars in both styles of Colonial Viper, armed Raptors, a Cylon Raider, Blackbird/Stealthstar and other kickass ships from the entire BSG universe.

Have a look!

Powered by the trusty Freespace 2 game engine, the single-player campaign takes place beside events in the Battlestar Galactica pilot, as the Battlestar Theseus, separated from the rest of the fleet, struggles to stay alive. The game also comes with an excellent original soundtrack inspired by the popular show. Multiplayer gaming is supported, allowing pilots to go head to head as Colonials or Cylons, and a complete mission editor is included for customizing secret stealth flights behind enemy lines.

So while we wait not-so-patiently for Bryan Singer's upcoming Battlestar blockbuster, we can zip around the cosmos content behind the stick of our sleek Mark VII strike variant Viper.

But sorry, you still can't take the Galactica on a joyride.
