Rumor of the Day: A Lord of the Rings king may be Thor 2's Dr. Strange

Friday, we heard that Marvel might be making room in Thor: The Dark World for its comic book Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Stephen Strange, to make his big-screen debut. We even heard a couple of names on the short list to play the master magician, but now it seems one name is rising above the rest, and he's got some Tolkien-based royal blood.

Yes, rumor has it that Aragorn himself, Viggo Mortensen, is now the frontrunner to play Strange in The Dark World, provided the rumor of the Doctor appearing in that flick was solid to begin with (it does seem very plausible). We also threw Mortensen's name out last week alongside Joel Edgerton (most recently of flicks like Warrior and The Thing), but word is Edgerton's schedule was already packed with projects like Kathryn Bigelow's kill-bin-Laden flick Zero Dark Thirty, leaving Mortensen alone at the top of the list.

Though we've got no official word on Mortensen's involvement, we know these rumors seem to have started with the Twitter account of Roger Wardell, who's been posting Marvel insider news for a few months now, and much of it has proved spot-on. According to Wardell, Mortensen was in "negotiations" with Marvel last month, but obviously we don't know how those negotiations turned out yet (or, let's be honest, if they actually took place). Sadly, this is all still just rumor, but how cool would it be for Marvel to bring Mortensen and his royal goatee in to play one of the most enigmatic and long-serving characters in the Marvel universe?
