28 Days Later writer reveals the latest on long-rumored sequel

A modern horror classic, 28 Days Later played a role in revitalizing the zombie genre, and the solid follow-up 28 Weeks Later was a capable if predictable sequel. Still waiting on the long-rumored third installment 28 Months Later? Don't hold your breath.

Original 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland, currently working the interview circuit to promote Dredd (which he also wrote), was asked if we'll ever see another installment in the cult hit franchise.

According to Garland, the franchise has pretty much run its course. Since zombies are hotter than ever these days, and a potential sequel would likely get lost in the glut, it makes sense that he wouldn't want to put out a sequel just to cash in.

Here's what he told Dread Central, which doesn't leave much hope that we'll ever return to that beautiful, British zombie-ridden world:

"I'm still so proud of 28 Days Later and how well it's been received over the years so I appreciate that. But in regards to another movie, no- there are no plans for a 28 Months Later or whatever they were calling it. This is a series I've always been heavily involved with between the original and the sequel so if there were plans for another movie, I would absolutely know about it."
So, sorry folks. Your zombie-bubble has officially been burst. Are you sad to hear there are no plans for a sequel, or are you glad to hear they're leaving well enough alone?
