Clone Wars S5 will reveal origins of Empire, death of Republic

Coming into its fifth season, Cartoon Network's Star Wars: The Clone Wars has turned into one of the most compelling components of George Lucas' flagship franchise. Now it's about to dig even deeper into some of the big gray areas of the Star Wars universe.

The series' supervising director, Dave Filoni, said the new season will focus on exactly how the Empire replaces the Republic, and unrest among the public over the Jedis' role in the world.

It's great to see the series digging into some themes that haven't been completely exhausted in the numerous films, and we're excited to see where this goes. Filoni told Entertainment Weekly:

"We've got some critical set-up this season to explore why the Sith triumph, why the Empire replaces the Republic, the kind of things that fans have always wondered about regarding this period. What do people really think of the Jedi? How is it that Palpatine had the Jedi eliminated and the galactic populace seems fine with that? What does it mean when Mace Windu walks in to the Chancellor's office and tries to arrest him? Would the people be for that or against that? Palpatine makes it look like the Jedi launched a coup. How is it that people would accept such an explanation?"
We don't know either, Filoni, but we're dying to find out.

The new season premieres Saturday, Sept. 29, in its new timeslot 9:30 a.m.
